What Is a Health Coach? (And Why You Might Need One More Than You Think)
I get asked this question a lot, usually by women who are exhausted, overwhelmed, and quietly hoping I'll tell them there's a quick fix to feeling better.
I wish I could. But the truth is, I don't have a magic wand. What I do have is something much more valuable: a way of working that fits into your real life, not one where you need to magically find three extra hours in the day.
So, what is a health coach?
Here's the myth. Some people think a health coach is a personal trainer with a gentler approach. Others imagine someone who hands you a meal plan, recommends a cupboard full of supplements, and sends you on your way.
That's not what I do. I'm not a nutritionist prescribing a specific diet, and I'm not a doctor treating a medical condition.
As an online Health Coach living in Dublin, I work with women who are feeling tired, overwhelmed, and struggling to prioritise their health. Together, we explore what's getting in the way of you feeling your best and build simple, realistic habits that fit around your life. We look at the core pillars of health; nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, energy levels, and the stage of life you're in right now.
While I'm not a nutritionist prescribing a strict diet, I do offer tailored nutrition planning - building sustainable, whole-food eating habits around your lifestyle, preferences, and goals, whether that's more energy, weight management, or simply eating well to feel well.
Because lasting change doesn't happen through perfection. It happens through small, sustainable steps that actually work for you.
The truth most women already know
If you're a busy woman in your 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond, juggling work, family, teenagers, grown-up children, grandchildren, or ageing parents, chances are you already know what you should be doing. Eat better. Move more. Get more sleep. Stress less. You don't need another list.
What most women are missing isn't information. It's support. It's structure. It's someone who understands that perimenopause, menopause, burnout, and the mental load of keeping everyone else's lives running can leave very little time or energy for yourself. And relying on willpower alone isn't sustainable.
One thing I've learned as a Health Coach is that most women don't need more health advice. They need someone to help them make healthy habits fit into their real life. That's where health coaching can make the difference.
The Reset Challenge: three steps to try this week
If you'd like a little taste of how coaching works, try this simple exercise.
Pick one thing. Not five - just one habit you've been putting off that you know would make a difference to how you feel. Maybe it's improving your sleep, eating a proper lunch, drinking more water, or taking ten minutes to move your body. Choose one.
Make it smaller. Whatever your first instinct is, make it easier. If your goal is to walk for 30 minutes a day, start with 10. If you want to drink more water, begin with one extra glass a day. Small wins build confidence, and confidence builds consistency.
Link it to something you already do. Attach your new habit to an existing routine - after the school drop-off, after your morning coffee, when you get to work. Park a little further away. Have a glass of water before your coffee. Get off the bus one stop earlier. Habits are much more likely to stick when they're connected to something already part of your day.
That's it. No overhaul. No perfection. No overwhelm.
Give yourself permission to prioritise yourself
You don't have to wait until you're completely burnt out before asking for help. You don't need to have everything figured out. And you certainly don't need to wait for the "right time" - because, realistically, when does that ever arrive?
Wanting to feel more like yourself again is reason enough.
If you're tired no matter how much you sleep, your energy is crashing by mid-afternoon, or your clothes feel tighter even though you think you're doing all the "right" things, you're not imagining it and you're certainly not alone. Many women experience these changes during midlife, and they're exactly the kind of challenges health coaching is designed to help with.
If you're looking for a Health Coach who understands the challenges women face during midlife and wants to help you build simple, sustainable habits, I'd love to chat. I work online, so wherever you're based - Dublin or elsewhere in the world - you can book a free 20-minute discovery call and we'll talk about where you are now, where you'd like to be, and whether I'm the right person to support you. No pressure, no obligation, just a friendly conversation about helping you feel more like yourself again.
