The Dreaded Summer Body

Why it’s rarely about the beach..

Are you one of those people who dreads the word "summer"? Not because of the sunshine or the time off, but because of what it means for your body - the countdown to being "beach ready."

I've lived this cycle myself. Cut the carbs, cut the treats, restrict for weeks beforehand. Then enjoy the holiday ice-creams, the drinks, and let the overindulgence run on until I see the next event, then back to restricting again. For years, I never once thought about my health while I was doing it. It was all about aesthetics. Looking a certain way. Being accepted.

I was away on holidays recently, looking out at the beach, and I noticed something. Every size of woman was there - toned, curvy, soft, strong. Everyone looked at ease in their swimsuit. If I'm honest, the old me would probably have judged some of those bodies. But going through my own health journey has completely changed how I see bodies - mine and everyone else's.

That's when I realised something we've been taught for years simply isn't true.

The Myth: Summer is about getting your body "right" for the beach.

False. It's rarely actually about the beach. It's about years of learning that our value is somehow linked to how we look rather than how we feel. Wanting to feel confident isn't the problem—it's where that confidence comes from. When we shift the goal from looking healthy to actually being healthy, everything changes. Feeling good no longer depends on a number on the scale or fitting into a certain size for a fortnight. Instead, it comes from having a body and mind that support the life you want to live. That's when the cycle of restricting, overindulging and starting over begins to loosen. Health becomes something you build through consistency, not something you chase for a holiday.

Ask yourself honestly…

When you think about your body on holidays, whose eyes are you seeing it through - yours, or everyone else's? Are you restricting because it makes you feel well, or because you think you have to "earn" the beach? I'm not asking you to feel guilty - just curious. That curiosity is often where the cycle starts to break.

And if you're reading this thinking, "That all makes sense, but I don't know how to stop thinking this way," you're not alone. Most of us have spent years absorbing these messages, so it makes sense they don't disappear overnight. The first step isn't changing your body - it's becoming aware of the story you've been telling yourself.

Here's the truth I keep coming back to: one holiday, one indulgent week will not undo your health. Your body responds to patterns, not isolated moments. What shapes your health is what you do consistently, day in and day out, over time.

Make Your Holidays the 20%, Not the Whole Story

You don't need to overhaul how you eat before you fly out, or punish yourself the second you land home. You need a way of thinking that lets you enjoy the 20% because the other 80% is already looking after you. Try this for your next holiday, weekend away, or night out.

  1. Name your 80%. Before you go, think about your normal week - meals, movement, sleep, water. That's the 80% that actually shapes your health. Notice it's already there, working away in the background.

  2. Let the 20% be the 20%. Give yourself full permission to enjoy the pizza, the ice cream, the glass of something cold in the sun, without mentally "banking" it as something to fix later. It's not cheating. It's living.

  3. Skip the pre-holiday restriction. Instead of cutting back the week before you go, keep doing what you'd normally do. Your body doesn't need to be "earned into" a holiday.

  4. Ease back in, don't punish. When you're home, go straight back to your normal routine - balanced meals, a bit of movement, plenty of water. No detox, no guilt, no starting again.

Remember: this isn't about finding the perfect body for the beach. It's about deciding, on purpose, that your health lives in the 80%, and your holidays are allowed to just be enjoyed. It's not selfish to enjoy your holidays fully. It's necessary. And noticing where your health really lives is where it begins.
